LANDING ON THE FOREST floor, Elora dug deep into the pocket of her gossamer gown. She vaguely noticed the pocket was actually her magical pocket that she had now that she could access her fae magic, but she really only cared about the sage green crystal at the bottom of it.
Her fingers closed over it while every piece of her plan fell into place in her mind. Since the plan was slightlyâor maybe extremelyâinsane, she wanted to get Brannickâs opinion on it first. And she still hadnât told him about Queen Noelaniâs death.
Brannick.
She thought his name while holding the crystal tight.
No door opened.
She thought his name a dozen more times.
Eventually, she pulled the crystal from her pocket to make sure she had the right one. But of course it was the right one. She only carried one crystal. Squeezing her fingers tight over the crystal again thought Brannickâs name a dozen more times. When that didnât work, she said his name out loud.
Nothing appeared.
He had promised to open a door to her when he could, but he still hadnât. Did it mean guards surrounded him? Or had something else gone wrong?
Bringing her closed fist to her chest, she attempted to keep her breaths steady. Worry would do nothing to help her. But each breath only sent another clench through her chest. What if something had happened to him?
Brannick.
Still nothing.
Just when tears started welling in her eyes, the tiniest whoosh sounded in front of her. She held her breath, scanning the forest around her.
After several uneven heart beats, she located his door. It wasnât big enough for her to walk through now. In fact, it twisted and swirled the smallest she had ever seen it.
The tiny door hovered an armâs length in front of her, just smaller than a thumbnail. Her shoulders hunched, but she tried to shrug it off. At least he had opened a door to her. Finally.
âCan you leave the dungeon for a bit?â Brannickâs voice drifted through the door to her, but he clearly spoke to someone else.
A gritty male voice responded. âI have orders to keep you in my sight until High Queen Alessandra returns here in person. Faerie is allowing me to blink, but that is all I can offer.â A slight pause. âAnd no, I cannot blink extra long either. I already tried.â
âHmm.â Brannickâs tone sounded tilted. âI do not suppose you couldââ
âI also have orders to report back to High Queen Alessandra anything you ask me.â
Brannick huffed. âI see.â A noise came next that sounded like a fist against a marble wall. âShe may be close to guessing our scheme then. I probably will not have any privacy until it is over.â
The door disappeared.
Elora blinked at the spot it had been, scarcely able to believe it had already vanished. Of course it made little sense to expect conversations with Brannick since he sat in a dungeon in Fairfrost Court. Yet she had come to expect them all the same. At least she knew nothing had happened to him.
